Lab Testing

While our nutritionists make every effort to provide nutrition counseling based on our clients’ feedback, their medical and diet history as well as lab results from our clients’ physician(s), sometimes it’s necessary for additional lab testing. The results of these tests can better inform our nutritionists about what’s happening in your body, which they can then use to help formulate a plan for your care.

Lab testing includes checking for food sensitivities; micronutrient levels; genetics; gastrointestinal issues including SIBO, IBS, and IBD; hormones; and more. Below is a sampling of the more popular tests we offer. This list isn’t comprehensive; if you’re looking for a different type of test not noted below, please contact Starkel Nutrition at (206) 853-0534 to schedule an appointment with one of our nutritionists who can recommend specific labs for your circumstances.

Food Sensitivities

ALCAT, by Cell Science Systems: Depending on the profile you choose, ALCAT can test between 50-237 different foods, as well as medicinal herbs, food additives and colorings, environmental chemicals, molds, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory agents. Clients are responsible for the full cost of this test as it cannot be billed to insurance through our office. Review a sample of the ALCAT result.

MRT Leap, by Oxford Biomedical Technologies: The MRT Leap test is offered in various panel sizes, from 30-150 different foods and food chemicals. A more affordable option than ALCAT, the MRT Leap test is priced to be insurance-agnostic, meaning the price is the same no matter your insurance coverage status. Review a sample of the MRT Leap result.

IgE and IgG food allergies and sensitivities, by Genova Diagnostics: These food allergy (IgE) and food sensitivity (IgG) tests cover a range of foods (including a variety of vegetarian foods), spices, inhalants, molds, as well as celiac and gluten. They can be ordered individually, or as a bundle. This test is billable to select insurances for a discounted rate, after patient-responsible lab co-pay. Unfortunately, clients with Aetna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, FED BCBS, Medicare, and Medicaid plans do not qualify for the discounted rate. Review a sample of the IgE or IgG results.

Micronutrients

These tests identify deficiencies in the body, such as vitamins and minerals, amino and fatty acids, antioxidants, and more.

Micronutrients, by Spectracell: This test is billable to insurance through our office, after patient-responsible lab co-pay. Review a sample of the Micronutrient result.

NutrEval, by Genova Diagnostics: This test is billable to select insurances for a discounted rate, after patient-responsible lab co-pay. Unfortunately, clients with Aetna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, FED BCBS, Medicare, and Medicaid plans do not qualify for the discounted rate. Review a sample of the NutrEval result.

Genetics

Genetic analysis: Clients complete a 23andme.com genetic test on their own accord, and then provide Starkel Nutrition with the raw data file. Starkel Nutrition will complete a health analysis on the raw data to determine any genetic abnormalities or mutations that could predispose clients to certain health conditions. This testing is not billable to insurance.

Telomere and Genotyping, by Spectracell: These tests can determine cell aging rate by measuring the telomeres of your chromosomes, as well as MTHFR, ApoE, and thrombosis (blood clotting) genotyping. This test is billable to insurance through our office, after patient-responsible lab co-pay.

Gastrointestinal

GI Effects, by Genova Diagnostics: This stool test assesses 24 commensal bacteria in the human microbiome; Calprotectin, a biomarker that differentiates between Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD); as well as identifies any ova or parasites. This test is billable to select insurances for a discounted rate, after patient-responsible lab co-pay. Unfortunately, clients with Aetna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, FED BCBS, Medicare, and Medicaid plans do not qualify for the discounted rate. Review a sample of the GI Effects result.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO/BOSI), by Genova Diagnostics: This breath test captures exhaled hydrogen and methane gases to evaluate bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine. This test is billable to select insurances for a discounted rate, after patient-responsible lab co-pay. Unfortunately, clients with Aetna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, FED BCBS, Medicare, and Medicaid plans do not qualify for the discounted rate. Review a sample of the SIBO result.

Hormones

These tests can help identify male or female (including menopausal) hormone levels, as well as thyroid and adrenal hormones.

Hormone Balance Tests, by Spectracell: This test is billable to insurance through our office, after patient-responsible lab co-pay.

Hormone Tests, by Genova DIagnostics: This test is billable to select insurances for a discounted rate, after patient-responsible lab co-pay. Unfortunately, clients with Aetna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, FED BCBS, Medicare, and Medicaid plans do not qualify for the discounted rate.
