Instructions
  1. Place apples, pears, lemon, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and water in a large soup pot and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat. Simmer and stir often, until apples are completely tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
  2. Remove the lemon, cinnamon stick and whole cloves. Let sauce cool slightly. Transfer to a blender and puree until as smooth as desired or mash with a potato masher, depending on whether you want a smooth or chunky consistency.
  3. Taste the sauce. If you feel it needs to be sweeter, add a teaspoon or two of maple syrup and reheat, stirring constantly, until it dissolves.
  4. Serve warm, room temperature, or cold. Store in the refrigerator.
